Custom Resin Stabilizing for Your Wood

(Plastic Impregnating)
We can resin stabilize your wood for you. Not sure if this will work for your wood? Check out our trial offer below. We use a pressure impregnation process with a heat curable polymer resin.

Wood Stabilization has many potential benefits:

  • Brings out the beauty of the wood by adding contrast to the grain and figuring.
  • Reduce end grain tear out
  • Hardens soft or spalted woods
  • Greatly reduce effects of humidity changes
  • Reduces or eliminates finishing requirements (varies with species)
  • Greatly improved dimensional stability for burls and highly figured woods
  • Please note that stabilizing will not repair cracks and holes

Stabilizing Prices  (shipping extra): (all pricing and weights are based on after stabilization finished weight, not raw untreated weights).

Note: Resin prices have continued to increase, so we have increased our pricing to cover those increases. New pricing is effective for wood shipments postmarked on or after August 1, 2007.

    Clear Stabilization

Less than 3 lbs:  $12.50 per lb
3 lb to 10 lbs: $10.50 per lb
10 lb to 30 lbs:   $9.00 per lb
30 + lbs:   $7.75 per lb (Charge base on finished weight)

Dyed and Stabilized   Note on dyed wood: Delivery times are considerably longer for dyed and stabilized under 30 lbs. Loads under 30 lbs (30 lbs is about 225  pen blanks, or 100 knife blank size for example) must be scheduled with other material of the same color to make a single load of about 30 lbs.)

Less than 3 lbs:  $16.50 per lb
3 lb to 30 lbs: $14.50 per lb
30 + lbs:   $11.75 per lb (Charge base on finished weight)

    Trial Offer:
If you aren't familiar with stabilizing, or if you have wood that you want to evaluate before stabilizing a large quantity, we encourage you to take advantage of our trial offer.

Send us up to 4 pen blanks, or 8 ounces of wood any size, and a personal check for $9.00 (US customers), and we will clear
stabilize and return ship. If you know, please tell us the species. Dyed colors not available with trial offer. (The $9.00 is for stabilizing and USPS Priority mail return postage).

Standard colors are wine; bright green (peridot); teal (blue turquoise);  blue; gold; bronze (light shade of brown). In 30 lb quantities other colors are available. Contact us with requirements.

We will determine the most economical shipping, and send you an invoice when your wood is ready to ship. We will ship by the most economical method unless you request otherwise. Up to about 20 pen blanks (sometimes more depending on size) can be shipped Priority mail for $4.75. Depending on size, between 20 and 100 pen blanks can ship in a Priority mail flat rate box for $8.75. Larger orders are normally cheaper by UPS ground.

If you wish to stabilize a smaller amount see our  our Trial Offer described farther below.

For reference, an average pen blank weighing 2 ounces after stabilization will cost about $1.10 each. A 1-1/2 x 1-/2 x 6" game call blank will average $4.50 stabilizing cost. These estimates are based on the $8.75 under 20 lb rate.

Most woods will weigh between .55 to .7 ounces per cubic inch (60 lbs to 75 lbs per cubic ft) after stabilization. If estimating weight remember that a typical box of packed wood is a quarter to a third dead air space. Shipping extra.

    Processing Time
We can usually ship clear stabilized wood in about two weeks from the time we receive it. This does not include transit times both ways. If you have a rush order please contact us prior to shipment. During some busy times of year we may need extra time depending on volume.

    Wood Preparation Instructions:

Please mark the end of your blanks with your initials. The best type of marker for this purpose is a white correction pen.
Paint pens and permanent markers may not be readable after submersion in the resin.  Please include a note indicating
what you want done to the wood, with your return address, contact info (phone number and/or email address), and how
you wish to pay (PayPal, credit card, or check).

To properly stabilize wood, it needs to be dry with moisture content below 10%. If you are not sure, please note in your
order and we will check it for you.

Please remove as much as possible of any wax coatings before shipping wood. Most sealing wax are insoluble in the
polymer resin, and will act as a barrier to the resin.

Cut wood slightly oversized to allow for possible warping or slight shrinkage. It is best to stabilize the wood near the
size it will be used. As block size increases the probability of internal resin shrinkage cracks, warping, or partial resin penetration increases. Thicknesses of 2" or less are best. Widths up to 8" and lengths up to 20" are possible. Please
    email us with specific questions.

    Disclaimer

  • Effectiveness of stabilizing varies with species and condition of wood.
  • Wood must be dry with moisture content below 10%.
  • Oily woods in particular are not good candidates for stabilization.
  • Percentage weight change after stabilization varies considerably with species and condition of wood.
  • Some warping and cracking can occur due to curing heat. Again varies with species, but tends to be more of an issue with cross cuts and highly spalted woods.
  • Stabilization will darken the wood to a degree. This effect will vary considerably by species.
  • The majority of our business is repeat customers. Our goal is for you to be pleased!
